My name is Avery Balasbas and I’m a high school English teacher in San Francisco. I’m an Asian American, Bay Area native. After a lot of brainstorming and encouragement from others, I decided I should do something with my writing. I feel like that’s the best way to put my other hobbies, passions, and art capabilities to good use. After designing a Google Site for my classes I figured I’d try it out for my own purposes. Find a way to get my content out there without feeling the pressure of posting daily or weekly. Or even waiting for the likes and comments to come in.
“Why [create] here?” Presently, it doesn’t feel like there’s any platform or space that allows me to feel comfortable posting my content without some sort of social pressure. Even though I make videos as a hobby, I sometimes get caught up in the analytics of what I’m publishing or creating. And I can’t say that I’ll ever get over that, especially in the kind of technology and media we’re immersed in today.
I feel like I have control over this (I’m not sure if it is control that I am after), though I’ve always found comfort and safety in my art. My writing or drawings have been locked away in lined paper, thank you/celebratory cards, yearbooks, moleskins, journals, and the notes on my phone. My curriculum ideas are somewhere deep in a folder. And my photos, videos, or media are deep in my external or never downloaded from the SD card. I want to have a space where that’s shared and accessible to others.
